Jacques Demy’s 1964 film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the great, sumptuous romantic films of all time. Led by legendary beauty Catherine Deneuve and given some of the most beautiful set decoration and fashion ever put to film, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg follows a pair of young lovers, Geneviève and Guy, as their relationship is sorely tested. Will Guy’s passion sustain two years away from his love while he serves in the army? Can Geneviève stay faithful as a wealthy, handsome new courtier comes calling?
Evocative and melancholy, this French musical is essential viewing to any fan of romance who doesn’t mind a bit of heartbreak. So, of course I chose it as my pick for the GeekRex Movie Club podcast. You can download the episode off iTunes or click here to listen at Stitcher.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is available free to stream on Hulu+, and can be rented on demand at Amazon Instant. If you watch it and love it, you can purchase a beautiful blu-ray collection called The Complete Jacques Demy put together by the Criterion Collection, which features a gorgeous restoration of the film as well as a host of other Demy classics, including The Young Girls of Rochefort and Lola.
