‘Equals’ (2016) Trailer

The trailer for Equals, a new science fiction film from director Drake Doremus (Breathe In), Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult are living in an antiseptic future where emotion is suppressed and people are reduced to cogs in the societal machine. But the machine isn’t flawless, and every so often, someone acts out and something breaks down. Stewart and Hoult meet and develop feelings for one another, but need to find a way to function in their day-to-day lives while breaking the law with their love.

While the basic premise is something we’ve all seen a hundred times, there are a few really promising things here. First: Kristen Stewart. Stewart gets a bad rap from dudes who hate Twilight without ever seeing Twilight, and it’s true, she’s a very mannered star. But she’s also incredibly talented. She isn’t a star by accident – she has a powerful, inward-leaning charisma, something you don’t see very often. She was strong in Clouds of Sils Maria, Still Alice, Adventureland, On the Road, and more. A romantic drama about overcoming an inability to feel is basically right up her wheelhouse. Even if it wasn’t, though, Stewart is a star worth paying attention to.

Second: A24. A24 has been on a roll for some time. The Witch, Room, Mississippi Grind, Ex Machina, The End of the Tour, Amy, Obvious Child – I could keep going, because A24 had put out a lot of astonishing films in their short, 3 year existence. And, an original science fiction romance starring Kristen Stewart and the most adorable War Boy from Mad Max: Fury Road? That’s a project I can get behind.

So, check out the Equals trailer below, and let us know if you’re excited for this one in the comments!

Equals was written by Nathan Parker (Moon) and Drake Doremus and directed by Drake Doremus. Equals stars Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult, and Guy Pearce.
