Welcome to Café Society, the newest film from one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting auteurs, Woody Allen. In this Café Society trailer, we find out a little about Allen’s newest film, a romantic dramedy featuring Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, and Blake Lively. Eisenberg plays Bobby, a young man who moves to 1930’s Los Angeles to get in close with his bigtime producer uncle in the movie business… or just to meet some gorgeous young women. There, he meets Kristen Stewart’s Vonnie, of whom he seems enamored, while also getting tangled up with Blake Lively’s Kat, a local club owner, family with mob connections, and a lot more. Café Society looks lively and energetic, as Allen often is in ‘breezy romantic comedy’ mode.
The fact is, I’m not a big Woody Allen fan. Now, that sits easy with my morals and is plenty comforting, sure, but I don’t judge folks who are Woody Allen fans. He is making the kind of movie virtually no one else can get away with making anymore, light but intellectual romantic comedies or relationship dramas with huge casts of some of the best and brightest stars around. Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, and Steve Carell are all performers I tend to love – and Stewart/Eisenberg has already proven to be a great pairing in Adventureland – while Blake Lively and Parker Posey can be incredibly interesting, albeit a little less reliably. As ever, Allen has assembled a cast that makes it difficult to turn the film down.
Plus, I have to say: I’m a huge fan of the classic Hollywood setting. Gorgeous costumes, larger than life stars, the banter, and the endemic corruption – it all has an old-fashioned charm that I tend to find irresistible. From the essential podcast You Must Remember This (seriously: listen to it), to films like Barton Fink or Hail, Caesar!, the Hollywood Golden Age lends itself well to outsized emotions and sweeping stories. Against my better judgment, I’m intrigued by this one. But you can check out the Café Society trailer below and make up your own mind.
Café Society will open the Cannes Film Festival soon before coming stateside for a theatrical release in 2016. Written and directed by Woody Allen, Café Society stars Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, and Steve Carell.
